"XOHM" is the new name for Sprint 's ambitious WiMax service.
XOHM is a collaboration of leaders in Communications spectrum. These are from technology, media, and the Internet space and have partnered together to develop and deliver an expansive and fast wireless mobile Internet experience.
XOHM and its network partners are working to build the WiMAX network across America rapidly and efficiently. Current plans are to test-launch the network in Chicago and Washington D.C. by year-end 2007, with a larger roll-out encompassing at least 100 million people by year-end 2008.
The effort is directed at developing a new business model that is Internet-based, not telecom-based, and therefore will be helpful in establishing a new service brand. The Companies in the XOHM ecosystem include:
- Sprint
- Motorola
- Intel
- Samsung
- Nokia Siemens Network
- Google
- Ericsson
- ZyXEL
- Nokia
- ZTE
- Alcatel Lucent
XOHM and its device and service partners have already taken major steps on a global scale to propel production and adoption of low cost chipsets and accelerate development of innovative quality WiMAX-enabled devices and applications.
XOHM marks the first “big-bang” launch of WiMAX. So far WiMAX has been afflicted by the Volumes syndrome. Low usage, low volumes and high prices of CPEs keeping mass less interested. XOHM represents the first countrywide launch of mobile WIMAX with the target of all mobile devices. This is sure to break the vicious volumes cycle for WiMAX and lead to growth worldwide.
The network will continue to be optimized for the customer network experience with preparations for start of commercial service in the second quarter. Beta users will gain experience with network access options and also the XOHM portal and various applications.
